I have a hard time parting with the items in my closet. I do however need to take necessary precautions to avoid turning into my dad and all the excess junk he has in his garage. So, every month I go through my closet and divide things by keep, throw out, or adjust.
Old clothing is not to be treated like an ex-boyfriend; dump, move on and never look back. On the contrary, you would be shocked at how many pieces in your closet can actually go from never being worn to never taken off. Before I throw anything out, or allow it to be stolen by my sisters, I spend some time being inventive. With a little creativity and a lot of safety pins you can transform those dated pieces of clothing to a stylish ready to wear look.
If done right, you will start getting a lot of “is that new?” from all your closest family and friends, who have seen your outfit repeats more times than once. If done wrong, you will probably look like a bad uncool version of Manrepeller, minus the 780 thousand Instagram followers.
My advice to you, is to look at every item you are about to throw away carefully and see where can you shorten it? Take it in? Add a new belt? Or Layer it?
For example – This shirt used to be one of husband’s custom made shirts. Now it is a fabulous blouse I use for under sweaters. The length, big cuffed sleeves and sharp collar is something I never could of found shopping in my own closet.
Would love to see what and how you transform the items in your closet. Post a picture of a skirt/shirt/dress or pants you reinvented and use hashtag #Greyavereinvented so we can see it!
